Information

We are only just getting started, so we don't really have a budget yet.  I've set aside 10,000 Euros for the roof and 5,000 for each bathroom.  We know we will most likely have lead pipes to deal with so a plumber will be engaged. A carpenter will have to fix the floor so this budget is a work in progress and I'll update it once I return from Crete and understand the scale of the project.  Where possible, I'd like to do the work (like stone pointing) myself.

Frequently asked questions

We will work more on the numbers and tweak them once we get a feel for the project. The numbers below reflect what I have learned by googling the cost of things on Crete. I've counted both bathrooms here and the plumbing will be done for both upstairs and downstairs at the same time to be more cost effective.  The same can be said for the electrical. In all, we expect to pay 30,300 Euros for Phase One (the renovation of the first floor) and downstairs bathroom. We have set aside a contingency of another 10,000 Euros for any surprises.

Roof

We have budgeted 10,000 Euros for the entire roof... replacing the asbestos, tiles and reinforced concrete.

Bathroom

We have budgeted 4,000 euros each. We decide to only do the top floor one and save the other for later.

Double glazed Windows

We have budgeted 15,000 for all double glazed windows... expanding two and adding one as well as replacing the windows in the verandah. 

Kitchen

2,000 Euros for appliances and building the cabinet and fixing the sink. We are planning to render the kitchen framing ourselves.

Plumbing - replacing lead pipes

We have budgeted 2,000 Euros for this

Electrical

We have budgeted 800 Euros - my husband is a trained electrician so he will help to rewire this. Lucky us!

Outside of house - Render and paint

We have budgeted 1,500 Euros we estimate to fix the outside spots and paint the house. Again, we hope to paint it ourselves.

Contingency

We will keep an additional 10,000 Euros aside for any snags we might hit.
