The Roof

This is where our journey begins. Currently we have a reinforced concrete flat roof over most of the house. There's an asbestos roof over the old verandah and terracotta tiles over a small room to the back of the house.  The entire roof needs replacing.

Flat reinforced concrete roof

Two of the larger rooms have reinforced concrete roofs. This was added quickly to the house in 1945 to make the house habitable again and allow the family to move back into the house. You can see the cracks and vulnerabilities of them now. This replacement is a priority.

Tiled roof

I was pleased to see at least a small part of the house had the terracotta tiled roof. We will absolutely preserve this and add more of it where we can.

Asbestos roofing

Greece used asbestos roofing extensively during the 20th century primarily due to the mineral’s low cost, abundance, and excellent physical properties, such as fire resistance and high durability.

Like many other Greek homes, our verandah still features this material. Our plan is to have it quickly and carefully removed and replaced.
